Phocis Mining Park – Vagonetto
The Phocis Mining Park – Vagonetto is a unique cultural site dedicated to the history of bauxite mining in Greece. What was once an active underground mining gallery, located 200 meters below ground, has been transformed into an immersive visitor experience. The park is situated at the 51st kilometer of the Lamia–Amfissa National Road, south of Gravia (Phocis), approximately 50 km from Arachova, within the facilities of E.B. – European Bauxites S.A. It has been open to the public since 2003.
The visit begins in the outdoor area of the park, where visitors can see original mining machinery used primarily in underground operations. The experience then continues into Gallery 850, the former bauxite extraction tunnel.
Access to the tunnel is made using the vagonetto—the small mining train that miners once used to travel deep inside the mine. This journey takes visitors back thirty years, to a time when the gallery echoed with miners’ commands and the constant sound of extraction machinery.
The tour concludes at the Mining History Exhibition Hall and the Digital Technology Wing, both housed in the former administrative buildings of the mines. An open-air exhibition of mining equipment further enriches the experience, offering insight into the tools and techniques that shaped the region’s industrial heritage.
The Vagonetto Mining Park offers an engaging and educational journey into the industrial past of Phocis and is a fascinating destination for visitors of all ages.
